VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State used a 16-4 run in the closing minutes of the first half and opening moments of the second half to defeat Lynn 72-64 in non-conference men's basketball action at The Complex Saturday evening.
With the win, Valdosta State improved to 5-0 on the year while Lynn fell to 2-2.
Lynn led for most of the first half as it scored 10 of the first 13 points of the game. After Valdosta State's David Murray hit a three-pointer to open the scoring, Jeremy Lampkin scored on a lay-up and Kaleb Clyburn hit a jumper to put the Fighting Knights in front. Clyburn and Slobodan Miljanic added back-to-back trifectas for LU during the game's opening run.
VSU closed to within four points over the ensuing three minutes of play, only to have Lynn use a 12-6 run to build its largest lead of the half at 24-14 with 8:42 to go in the first half.
The Blazers once again fought back as they got to within 29-25 on a Shaquille Harris free throw five minutes later and, after five straight points by Lynn, closed with the half's final six points to trail 34-31 at the intermission.
The Valdosta State run continued over the first four minutes of the second half as they opened the final 20 minutes of play with a 10-4 spurt. Four different Blazers scored during the run, led by Shaquille Harris who hit a three to tie the game and added a lay-up to put VSU in front 38-36. After Brandon Smith hit a jumper to tie the game for the final time, Patrick Diop hit a three to give the Blazers the lead for good.
Lynn kept the game close for the next seven minutes as it trailed by no more than five while getting as close as a single point. However, Valdosta State responded 13-4 run late in the half to seal the victory. The spurt by the Blazers gave the team its largest lead at 66-55 with 2:05 remaining. Lynn fought back to get within four, only to have James Anacreon hit four free throws in the final 11 minutes to seal the win.
Anacreon scored 17 points to lead Valdosta State while Murray finished with 14 and Harris 12. The Blazers shot 47.1 percent from the floor in the game as they connected on 24-of-51 shots. VSU also had 11 steals on 19 Lynn turnovers in the game.
Clyburn finished with 17 points to lead Lynn while Pavle Raickovic had 16 and Miljanic 12. The Fighting Knights shot 44.9 percent from the floor.
Valdosta State returns to action as it hits the road for the first time this season when it travels to Union in Jackson, Tenn. to open Gulf South Conference play on Thursday, November 29. Tip-off is slated for 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
