Health Matters: The Facts on Mercury

April 7, 2011
Americans exposure to mercury from sources such as fish is not associated with a higher risk of heart disease.
Mercury exposure has repeatedly been linked to neurological deficits in children and unborn babies.
Scientists from Harvard and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston evaluated data on over 170,000 men and women.
They went over answers about participants medical history, risk factors, disease incidence and lifestyle.
They also measured mercury concentrations in the toenail clippings of nearly 7,000 of them, about evenly split between people who have and have not had any cardiovascular troubles.
The team found no sign that mercury levels hiked cardiovascular risk.
The study, which was funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and is published in the "New England Journal of Medicine."
