Tallahassee, FL -- Rising senior Khalid Thomas is continuing the pipeline of players from Godby to division one football, with his verbal commit to Kentucky.
"I fell in love with their coaching staff. They have a great tradition and I just felt like that was the place I could be for the next three to four years."
Godby is in the middle of summer workouts but Khalid wanted to make a commitment before camp began, so he can concentrate on his senior season.
"He wanted to go ahead and commit because he was worried about taking care of Godby and to me, that just showed a lot of maturity on his part," says head football coach Ronnie Cottrell.
Thomas will be a four year starter for the Cougars. In his junior year he was Godby's leading rusher and receiver.
"Never played JV. He was always on the varsity," adds assistant coach Cleon McFarlane. "He never whined or complained, he just took his lumps and as time went on he got better and better. He's our leader right now."
Thomas had offers from other major programs like Ohio State, South Carolina and Miami, but Kentucky has one tool that no other program could match. His older brother Kadeem, is entering his freshman season with the Wildcats.
"The funny thing is they're really like night and day," adds McFarlane "Poncho, the older brother, is a raw, raw, raw guy. Poncho is a very high energy guy. Khalid is more of the laid back type."
"I'm used to playing with him," Khalid adds. "I'm actually kind of happy that we're going to be able to play again in college."
