Madison, FL - As they walk on the field, they pass a billboard staring at them as they practice. The numbers and letters transfixed on this billboard are more significant to the Madison County Cowboys this week than they've ever been this season.
"This group, probably more than others, has had to fight and scrap and just a real gritty, tough bunch of kids that have found a way to win every Friday," Head Coach Michael Coe said.
And now it comes down to just one last week, one more win.
"Go in there have a good time, playing every play hard, not giving up and bring home the ring," said Ira Denson, a senior offensive tackle.
The Cowboys were one win away from a state title last season. Players on that team like Denson, Keon Bruton and Sheddrick Williams remember it well. But they feel it's made them stronger.
They'll have to get past University School to win Madison County's first title in five years.
"I get tired of them talking about University, University, University," Bruton said. "I want to show that Madison County...what Madison County can do."
The Cowboys beat First Academy in the semifinals by 24 points last week.
"I think our last game we played the toughest and we just gotta take it on to State," Williams said.
Coe says unlike teams of the past, this group may be his most cohesive.
"I've been down there and we've got whipped before and the sun comes up the next morning," he said. "And no matter what happens I'm going to be proud of this group of kids."
