Tallahassee, FL - June 17, 2012 -
The Prostyle U17 volleyball team will be competing at the AAU Nationals next week, followed by the Junior Nationals in early July.
Everything around the Prostyle Volleyball facility seems to be the same as usual. The under-17 team will be going to AAU Nationals next week, just like they have the past couple of summers. But, this year, they have new coach.
Erica Bunch took over for Rita Crockett this past December. Crockett, a former Olympian, accepted a job at Florida International University in Miami, Florida.
"I've brought different things to the table - different than Rita," Bunch said. "And just with different things, I'm younger, so maybe a little more pop."
"She's a great coach and she's down to Earth," said Jade Strawberry, an outside hitter. "She's warm-hearted and it's just awesome to have her."
Crockett may be gone, but the talent level is just as high. At least two players are bound for division-1 schools.
"We've earned our spot here," said Lindsey Rogers, an outside hitter. "We might be with some of the newbies, some of the teams that's been together since they were 12."
But the games at Nationals will mean more to their futures.
"It's probably going to determine where I go to college, a lot of it," said Breighly Bolton, a middle hitter. "What the coaches see in me and what they see in all the players."
The girls know the best way to get noticed is with a first place finish.
"We have a good, different mixture of girls that like are all coming together and we have a lot of energy," said Elyse Warren, a setter. "I just think we'll do really well."
"We've all been working really hard for this and, like I said, Erica has the same mentality as Rita does," said Halle Scott, a setter. "And she's going to tell us we can win it and as long as we believe in ourselves I think that we'll do well."
