Bobby Bowden has more wins than any coach in Division 1 college football history. But in South Georgia, another coach is just as popular as Coach Bowden; and just as successful.
In a room, in a house, at a church in Valdosta sits 35 years of sports memories. The man behind it all is Robert. He's a coach at heart. Been at it long enough to rival Bobby Bowden. In fact, he even has letters from the FSU Head Coach offering up encouragement.
"We tried to do the right thing, we did it, we were successful and won some state titles. We won a little bit of everything."
The similarities between Rob and Bob are amazing. So much so that some people think the two are one in the same.
"He's the one with the headaches, I'm not."
Bobby's son is Tommy, Rob's is Tony. This coach mentored a young Steven Drew, while Bobby has Drew Weatherford. And both are very spiritual.
While Bobby Bowden spends his mornings watching video, Robert spends them picking blueberries. He's been doing it for years. Even with a spinal disease, he's up at the crack of dawn, doing what he calls God's work.
But the voice of the Open Bible Church Warriors has a lot more in common with Bobby Bowden than you might think. Rob is actually Bob. Bobby Bowden that is. Same name, same game. Just two different guys doing what they love. They've even coached some of the same players.
"They said, let me get this straight now, this is my old Coach Bowden and my new Coach Bowden. So we laughed and shook hands about it."
FSU's Bobby Bowden has 373 wins, Valdosta's Bobby Bowden lost track a long time ago....but what he hasn't lost track of are his memories, and the players that made his life special....And from time to time, the Drew boys will drop a line...an appreciation for the Bobby Bowden they knew long before they met the other Bobby Bowden.
