The Ernie Sims Big HITS Foundation was founded by Ernie Sims of the Detroit Lions. The mission of the foundation is to provide support to community-based organizations that offer services to disadvantaged youth and young adults and to assist organizations that support animal humanity. The word “HITS” means, “Helping to Instill Tools for Success”.
The foundation supports community-based organizations that strengthen families, particularly those children and families with the greatest economic need and the least opportunity.
The foundation provides assistance in education, recreation, sports, social and spiritual enrichment. It supports programs that foster character building, leadership skills, mentorship, and reinforcement incentives. This in turn will strengthen the entire community.
The Ernie Sims Big HITS Foundation offers three main priority areas of community support.
Sports Camps and Recreation Programs
Athletic participation provides countless rewards for youth. Research suggests that creating opportunities for youth to participate in sports can play a key role in the prevention of school dropout and juvenile crime. Sports programs can increase academic achievement, help decrease youth involvement in delinquent behavior and improve youth attitudes about themselves and their future. Sports activities promote teamwork, accountability, technical skills, and enhance social skills.
Educational Programs and Activities
The educational success of youth today will guide the future economic success of our community. Participation in quality educational programs/activities that promote attending post-secondary colleges and institutions can have significant impact on youth accomplishing their full potential. The Ernie Sims Big Hits Foundation hopes to create opportunities to motivate and empower youth to achieve academic excellence and provide opportunities for them to follow and fulfill their dreams.
Humanity for All Animals.
Recently there has been an increase in animal related violence prevention and intervention programs around the United States. These programs work to reduce the cycles of violence and abuse through teaching humane education and fostering respect for animals. The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest and most effective animal protection organization—backed by 10 million Americans. The Ernie Sims Big HITS Foundation supports the mission of the Humane Society and other nonprofit agencies who seek humane treatment and services for all animals. The foundation offers support that reduces animal suffering and cruelty, disaster relief, rescue facilities, direct care, shelters, sanctuaries, educating the public about animal issues, and programs that make a more humane world for all pets and wildlife.
Starting Friday, July 10th, Big HITS is holding a number of camps and events for those wanting to take part. The entire list of events is posted below.
100% of the money donated goes to the foundation to support the program services. Ernie pays for all administrative cost.
