CLEARWATER, Fla. - Fontanez, the 2010 BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year, picks up post season honors for the second time in his career after been named to the First Team in 2009. Despite a 5-6 record, Fontanez led the BIG EAST in strikeouts (97) and innings pitched (102.1). Fontanez had four complete games on the season including a no-hitter against Notre Dame. Fontanez returned to form in BIG EAST play going 5-2 against BIG EAST opposition in nine starts with batters hitting just .231 against him.
Barbosa, a walk-on who joined the Bulls this summer, emerged as the Bulls No. 2 pitcher early on the in season after earning a team-high seven wins and a team low 2.27 ERA. He tallied 87 Ks in 79.1 innings. The 6'8 lefty allowed just nine earned during BIG EAST play for a 1.66 ERA.
Fontanez was named BIG EAST pitcher of the week twice in 2010 while Barbosa picked up the honors after his 16-strikeout performance against Cincinnati.
Fontanez will start game one for the Bulls tomorrow evening against St. John's in the first round of the 2010 BIG EAST Championships while Barbosa will start the Bulls second game of the tournament against either West Virginia or top-seeded Louisville.
