Lakeland, FL - Valdosta State women’s tennis is competing at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Lakeland, Fla., at Florida Southern College this weekend.
The fall tournament helps determine rankings and seedings for the spring season. So far, Valdosta State is already set to face a seeded team.
Nicole Hernandez and Leslie Roberge were able to beat Kamryn Blackwood and Frederica Longo of Nova Southeastern, 8-6. Hernandez and Roberge will play Kayli Ragsdale and Margaret Junker of Rollins, the fifth seeded doubles team at the tournament, at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
Valdosta State did not perform quite as well in singles with all three players going to the consolation round. Freshman Jessica Tuggle fell to Natalia Trotter of Palm Beach Atlantic, 6-4, 6-2, then, in consolation, lost to Jessica Hsu of West Florida, 6-2, 6-1.
Roberge fell to Lynn’s Jessica Yanoff, 6-0, 6-0 but advanced in the first round of consolation when Stefania Tkach of Rollins resigned due to illness. Roberge will face Jessica Wharton of Palm Beach Atlantic at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Wharton is coming off a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Hernandez also picked up a win in consolation after falling to Lynn’s Isabelli Raich, 6-1, 6-0. Hernandez was able to persevere through three sets against West Alabama’s Natalia Cardenas, 4-6, 6-0, 10-2, to advance. She faces Bethania Laan of Saint Leo at 1 p.m. Friday. Laan is coming off a 6-1, 6-1 performance.
