Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State opened Gulf South Conference play against West Florida Friday night. The Argonauts, a perennial power in the GSC, proved to be too much for VSU with a 3-0 win. With the loss, Blazer volleyball drops to 0-1 in the GSC and 7-5 overall.
The Blazers came out hot early with a 3-1 lead. Then both teams teeter-tottered back and forth until West Florida gained control. After the 25-18 win in the first set, West Florida went on to sweep VSU, 25-18, 25-23, 25-11.
Valdosta State did put up a fight in the second set, answering every Argo point and even gaining a 22-20 advantage. The Blazers could only score one more point, however, before West Florida reached 25 points.
While Irene Hannan led the team in kills (nine), Anna Nichenko and Katie Onushko led in attacking percentage. Nichenko tallied three kills on four attacks for a .750 percentage while Onushko threw down six kills on a .625 percentage.
Emelia Saulter dished for 12 assists while Chelsea Luttfring notched 10 digs. Tania Tauiliili was in on two blocks to lead the team.
Valdosta State will get a chance to rebound against West Alabama at 4 p.m. Saturday.
