Lakeland, FL - Valdosta State women’s tennis is competing at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Lakeland, Fla., at Florida Southern College this weekend.
The fall tournament helps determine rankings and seedings for the spring season. So far, Valdosta State is already set to face a seeded team.
Nicole Hernandez and Leslie Roberge were able to beat Kamryn Blackwood and Frederica Longo of Nova Southeastern, 8-6. The duo could not get past Kayli Ragsdale and Margaret Junker of Rollins, the fifth seeded doubles team at the tournament. Hernandez and Roberge fell, 8-0.
Valdosta State did not perform quite as well in singles with all three players going to the consolation round. Freshman Jessica Tuggle fell to Natalia Trotter of Palm Beach Atlantic, 6-4, 6-2, then, in consolation, lost to Jessica Hsu of West Florida, 6-2, 6-1.
Roberge fell to Lynn’s Jessica Yanoff, 6-0, 6-0 but advanced in the first round of consolation when Stefania Tkach of Rollins resigned due to illness. Against Jessica Wharton of Palm Beach Atlantic Roberge fell, 6-3, 6-0.
Hernandez also picked up a win in consolation after falling to Lynn’s Isabelli Raich, 6-1, 6-0. Hernandez was able to persevere through three sets against West Alabama’s Natalia Cardenas, 4-6, 6-0, 10-2, to advance. She could not take a set off Bethania Laan of Saint Leo though. Hernandez fell, 6-2, 6-1.
