Argonauts Prove Too Much for VSU

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Gulf South Conference leading Argonauts of West Florida proved to be too much for Valdosta State Saturday as UWF swept the Blazers, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-16). The loss drops VSU to 11-8 on the season and 3-4 in conference play while West Florida stays undefeated in the GSC, 7-0, and improves to 12-7 overall.

Valdosta State played its best set in the second, hitting .282, but the Argonauts were able to hold off the Blazer charge. West Florida hit .297 in the second set, the team’s best attacking percentage for the match as well.

After falling by two points in the second set, Valdosta State started the third set strong. Valdosta State built an 8-4 lead before the Argonauts could regroup. After a timeout, West Florida stormed back to grab an 11-9 lead and would go on to finish the match after that.

Chelsea Logan led the Blazer attack with 12 kills while Katie Onushko added nine on a .240 attacking percentage. Tania Tauiliili attacked from the middle with seven kills and just one error on 15 attacks for a .400 percentage. No other Blazer had more than three kills.

Ashley Lala gave 33 assists while Chelsea Luttfring led in digs with 10. Krista Bradford racked up nine digs, and Onushko finished with seven. Not other Blazer had more than six.

Valdosta State did give good effort defensively at the net with six blocks. Destiny Berry and Logan each tallied a solo block while Onushko was in on three assists. West Florida won the battle though, finishing with seven blocks.

Lindsay Homme finished with 11 kills for West Florida while libero Anna Stoecklein tallied 15 digs in the match. Tricia Tirabassi and KaLee Duggan split the playmaking duties with Tirabassi registering 19 assists and Duggan finishing with 12.

Valdosta State will look to rebound on the road against Fort Valley State at 7 p.m. Wednesday. After that, VSU will travel to Pensacola, Florida to take on four Sunshine State Conference teams and will face West Georgia on the road before returning to The Complex October 21 at 7 p.m. to face Alabama-Huntsville.
