VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State continued a strong run through the Gulf South Conference in the team’s first season with a 3-2 victory over West Alabama to improve to 5-1 in the GSC and 11-4 on the season.
The Tigers were able to place all seven shots of theirs on goal, but goalkeeper Olivia Mills made five saves to keep the Blazers in it.
Midfielder Leanne Bishop, scoreless to date, exploded for three goals in the match to win it for Valdosta State.
West Alabama went ahead 1-0, then Bishop headed in a corner from Arielle Sabina to tie the match. Again, the Tigers pulled ahead, 2-1, with a goal from Nicki Gears, but Bishop answered with an unassisted goal just 25 seconds later from far outside the box. She lifted the ball up and over the goalkeeper’s head to tie the match with 31 seconds left in the first half.
Bishop would go on to score the only goal of the second half, this time off an assist from Blakely McClellan, who corralled the ball after another corner kick.
The Blazers shot 15 corners in the match while West Alabama could only muster three. Valdosta State also unleashed a barrage of shots, 19, and put seven of them on goal.
Valdosta State will next be in action against Thomas at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the VSU Soccer Complex.
