Albany, GA - After being rained out of the team’s first tournament of the season, Valdosta State finally found a dry field for the team’s first games of the season. The Blazers started the season strong, sweeping Albany State, 11-0, 15-1, in five innings each game.
Returning pitchers Holly Satterfield and Margaret Carter earned the wins on the day while Krystle Robinson also logged pitches. Satterfield struck out six Golden Rams with just one walk and two hits in five innings. Carter struck out two and gave up one hit while Robinson struck three out, allowed one hit and gave up an unearned run.
The VSU bats showed they are still in shape with home runs from Sam Posey and Natalia Morozova in the first game of the day.
Big hitter Marti Littlefield had a strong day, going four for seven. Ashley Steinhilber, taking over the catcher’s spot from Alyssa Shirey, went a perfect three for three in the first game of the day with two triples.
After blasting a home run in the first game, Posey came back in the second game to go two for four and score two runs. Meanwhile, Clare Wamsley returned to the field after missing much of last season to go two for three with a triple and scored two runs.
Also showing up strong was April Hutchens. Hutchens went two for two with a walk and scored three runs. She stole four bases on the day.
The next time VSU takes the field will be at home March 1 at 3 p.m. against Georgia Southwestern.
