VALDOSTA, Ga. – West Georgia played Valdosta State to a tie at the VSU Soccer Complex last season and it looked like it might happen against until Sydney Smith scored her first career goal to keep Valdosta State undefeated, 4-0, with a 1-0 victory over the Wolves.

Valdosta State held an overwhelming advantage in shots Thursday, 16-3, with most of the shots coming in the first half (13). West Georgia only mustered two in the opening frame while both team slowed down in the second. The Blazers only struck two shots while the Wolves only had one.

Not many shots were on goal, but keeper Olivia Mills did make two saves to keep VSU in the match. West Georgia keeper Mary Laza received her fair share of work with seven saves in the match, but she needed one more.

Valdosta State put the ball deep in West Georgia’s territory where a UWG defender mishandled the ball. Smith claimed advantage and was able to lob the ball over a charging Laza to win the game for the Blazers.

It was Smith’s only shot of the night, but Rebecca Miller and Leanne Bishop provided pressure all match. Miller shot four times with two on goal while Bishop unleashed three shots with one landing on goal. Both of defender Arielle Sabina’s shots were on goal. Both Abbi Edwards and Karly Lentz also placed a shot on goal.

Only three Wolves took shots with two on goal. Both Anna Cusick and Shannon MacLean were stonewalled by Mills.

Even though the match was against West Georgia, it will not count in the conference standings. However, the match is recorded in both teams’ overall records.

Valdosta State will travel to Charlotte, N.C., next to face Queens at 2 p.m. Sunday before returning home to host North Alabama in a conference match at 5 p.m. September 21.
