VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State started the team’s second season with a suffocating victory over Coker. Sophomore midfielder Leanne Bishop scored late in the 10th minute off a corner kick. Rebecca Miller was able to deflect the ball off the corner and Bishop finished with the header to put VSU ahead, 1-0. That would be all the Blazers needed.
While Coker could only sneak two shots against Valdsota State’s impressive defense, the Blazers piled it on with 28 shots and 19 on goal.
Outside of playmaking, Miller was also a scoring threat in the front. She led the team with five shots on goal while sophomore forward Lauren Ingram added three along with Bishop. The Blazers were able to put 15 shots on goal with the starters, but substitutions led to four more shots on goal for Valdosta State.
Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Mills played the whole way, but wasn’t tested much with Coker not even placing a single shot on goal.
The Blazers will look to parlay this victory with a conference victory against Delta State when the team returns to action on the road next Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Valdosta State returns home to host West Georgia at 6 p.m. September 13.
