Jackson, TN - Valdosta State concluded this weekend's Gulf South Conference road trip with a 3-1 victory over Union Sunday (27-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15), to improve to 9-5 on the season and 3-3 in GSC action.
The Bulldogs took Valdosta State to the edge in the first set of the match, forcing extra points, but VSU prevailed, 27-25. Union kept the pressure on in the second set, taking Union's only set of the match, 25-22, in the second. Then Valdosta State rebounded and put away Union with matching 25-15 sets to claim the match.
Tania Tauiliili turned in her best offensive performance of the season with 14 kills and a .429 attacking percentage, only hitting two errors.
Nikki McDaniel provided offensive support with 12 kills while Katie Onushko and Destiny Berry combined for 13 kills.
Lala joined Ripsam to provide 42 assists.
Hope Ripsam and Ashley Lala continue to provide a balanced effort for the setter position as both players finished with 21 assists.
While Krista Bradford and McDaniel each finished with 10 digs, Chelsea Luttfring did the heavy lifting on the back line with 18 digs. Ripsam and Lala combined for 16 digs in support.
After hitting .140 and .139 in the first and second sets, Valdosta State put together a strong effort in the third set, finishing with 14 kills, just four errors and a .345 attacking percentage. Meanwhile, the VSU defense shut down Union in the fourth set for just seven kills, six errors and an attacking percentage of a mere .034. The Blazer defense kept it up, holding Union to just .033 in the fourth and final set while hitting a .227.
Valdosta State will stick to the road for its next action as the Blazers travel to West Alabama for a 7 p.m. match Friday and will stick to the road for matches against Albany State, West Florida, Alabama-Huntsville, West Georgia and Shorter before playing in the Gulf South/Sunshine State Regional Crossover Tournament over October 18-20.
