Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State followed a dominating performance against Albany State with another one against New Orleans, sweeping the Privateers, 3-0 (25-6, 25-16, 25-18).
The Blazers jumped to a quick start in the first set, going up 3-0 behind service from Ashley Lala, end eventually, 10-2. Valdosta State hit an attacking percentage of .407 in the first set and .310 in the third. The team’s low point was still an impressive .286 in the second set to finish with a team percentage of .333.
Valdosta State’s defense held New Orleans to just 24 kills and a mere .083 attacking percentage for the match. The Blazers tallied five blocks to just one for New Orleans while VSU also racked up 47 digs to just 37 for UNO.
Leading the Blazers on offense was Katie Onushko. She finished with nine kills and three errors for a .316 attacking percentage. Chelsea Logan finished with eight kills while both middle blockers Tania Tauiliili and Destiny Berry each added six, Berry doing it with no errors on eight attacks for a game high .750 attacking percentage.
Sharing the load at setter was Lala and Hope Ripsam. Lala finished with 16 assists and 10 digs for the only double-double of the match while Ripsam pitched in 14 assists, two service aces, two digs and a block. Lala added four aces and a kill.
Behind Lala defensively was Chelsea Luttfring with nine digs while Onushko added eight. Onushko also led the team in blocking with one solo and three assists.
The Blazers will next face the Gulf South Conference leading West Florida Argonauts at 2 p.m. Saturday.
