Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State took a quick break from Gulf South Conference play with a match against Albany State Monday night. The Blazers stormed out to a 14-2 lead in the first set and never looked back on their way to the team’s 19th win of the season, 25-11, 25-12, 25-15.

Irene Hannan and Ruthie King both doubled up in the match with 12 kills and 16 digs for Hannan and 10 kills and 15 digs for King. Chelsea Logan and Arielle Parnell added eight digs each, Parnell doing it with a .615 attacking percentage.

Emelia Saulter passed out 25 assists while Hope Ripsam dished out 18. Ripsam also dove under seven digs. After Chelsea Luttfring posted six digs in the first set, Macy Markham took over at libero to finish with 10 digs, eight digs alone in the second set.

In the first set, Valdosta State dominated offensively with a .536 attacking percentage and finished at .389 for the match. Meanwhile, the VSU defense held Albany State to just a .030 attacking percentage and even a -.056 mark in the second set.

Sabrina Garcia led the Golden Rams in kills with six while Priscila Sena passed out 11 assists. Sena also led the team in digs with eight.

In the first set, Valdosta State only needed a single rotation to get the win. Saulter served VSU to a 5-0 lead, then King served eight straight points to gain a 14-2 lead. With the score at 16-4, Parnell killed a point from Saulter. Then Ripsam served four consecutive points, two kills from Hannan and two from Onushko.

Valdosta State returns to conference action in The Complex Friday at 6 p.m. against Alabama-Huntsville and against North Alabama at 3 p.m. Saturday to end VSU’s conference season. The Blazers, however will continue on to play Saint Leo and Fort Valley State before competing in the GSC Tournament. Valdosta State has already clinched a berth, along with West Florida, in the conference tournament.
