Pensacola, FL - In a late season match with regional implications, Valdosta State fell short against Saint Leo to drop to 20-10 on the season. The Lions outlasted Valdosta State, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 32-30, 25-13).
The Blazers came out strong with a 25-22 win in the first set. But Saint Leo fought back to take the second set, 25-23. The third frame went to extra points with both teams jockeying back and forth until the Lions finally won, 32-30. With a 2-1 lead, Saint Leo closed VSU out in the fourth set, 25-13.
Chelsea Luttfring led the team defensively with 22 digs while Irene Hannan and Ruthie King tallied 19 and 17 digs respectively. Arielle Parnell led the defensive efforts at the net with four block assists and one solo.
Hannan tallied 18 kills on the night. She received support from Chelsea Logan and Katie Onushko who finished with 12 and 10 kills respectively.
Emelia Saulter led the team in assists with 31, and Hope Ripsam pitched in 19 assists.
For Saint Leo, Danielle Bletso led offensively with 18 kills, and Jaclyn Mailoto gave out 51 assists. Defensively, Corey Ryan tallied 21 digs while Bruna Rocha had 19. Bletso was in on eight blocks and one solo to help the Lions finish with 12 blocks.
Valdosta State will play its final match of the regular season against Fort Valley State at 6 p.m. Monday, then head for the Gulf South Conference Tournament next weekend.
