MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Valdosta State fought past West Florida, 5-1, to claim the team’s fourth consecutive Gulf South Conference Championship.
Despite losing a point in doubles play, the Blazers persevered to win three singles matches to clinch the championship.
Valdosta State struck first when Philip Pakebusch and Luis Loeffler, the No. 11 doubles team, beat Domenico Sano and Sean Gunnels at the second doubles spot, 8-2.
The Argonauts responded at third doubles though. Jose Carlos Tolentin and Mike Lue beat Bernhard Wallner and Otto Lenhart, 8-5.
The No. 2 doubles team, Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen ensured VSU would hold a lead after doubles with a 9-7 victory over No. 10 Andrey Pozhidaev and Leandro Ferreira.
In singles play, the Blazers earned points in the top two slots and the fifth spot. Konstantin Kutschenko was first to finish with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sano.
No. 2 Pakebusch and No. 19 Dueren did what they have done most of the season in the top two spots: win. Dueren beat No. 27 Pozhidaev, 6-4, 6-3, and Pakebusch beat No. 18 Ferreira by the same score to clinch the match.
Valdosta State will go on to the NCAA Tournament to compete in regional action Sunday, May 1.
