MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Both the Valdosta State men’s and women’s tennis teams cruised through the Gulf South Conference Tournament to the GSC Championship finals where both teams ran into West Florida. The Argonauts took down the Blazers, 5-1, and the Lady Blazers, 5-2, to claim the GSC Championships for both tennis teams.
The Valdosta State men were off to an inauspicious start when they fell behind Argos, 3-0, after doubles play. Christian Hansen and Niklas Herbring had the best chance to sneak a point out of doubles, but fell to Bruno Savi and Kevin Ducros, 9-8. Tammo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk were next in line, dropping, 8-6, to Leandro Ferreira and Andrey Pozhidaev. Konstantin Kutschenko and Nicola Kusy fell to Domenico Sano and Mike Lue, 8-3.
In singles action, not much changed for VSU. Both Kutschenko and Santiago Vidales fell. Kutschenko dropped to Savi, 6-1, 6-4, in the second slot while Vidales lost by the same score to Ferreira to give the match to UWF. One bright spot for the Blazers, however, was Hansen’s play. He made short work of Ducros in the top spot, 6-0, 6-3.
The women started strong against the Argonauts with a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Sara Braun and Alina Nagel beat Caitlyn Baines and Sheila Smiley, 8-6, in the top spot while Tina Trautmann and Maja Ehses took down Fernanda Amaral and Hannah Durham, 8-3, in the bottom doubles spot.
The Lady Blazers could not make it a clean sweep of doubles though, with Mariana and Luiza Sonnervig defeating Michelle Fischer and Juliana Boehm, 8-6.
Needing to win three singles matches to take the match, Valdosta State could not get one. West Florida won the bottom four singles matches.
Valdosta State’s best chance came in the fifth spot with Nagel facing Baines. Nagel won the first set, 6-2, and pushed Baines in the second, but fell, 7-5. In the third and deciding set, Baines ran away with it, 6-2.
Ehses and Trautmann both fell by the same score, 6-4, 6-1, in the third and fourth slots. Ehses dropped to Luiza Sonnervig while Trautmann could not beat Smiley. In the bottom singles slot, Nicole Hernandez fell, 6-0, 6-3, to Durham.
