Blazers Midseason Report: Volleyball

Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State has caught fire in recent weeks, winning seven matches in a row. The Blazers are coming off a dominating performance at Armstrong Atlantic and a come-from-behind victory over the last undefeated team in the Gulf South Conference East Division, North Alabama.

With the win over North Alabama, Valdosta State sits atop the GSC East in a three-way tie with West Florida and North Alabama. The threesome are 4-1 in the Gulf South action while Valdosta State is an impressive 14-5 overall.

In fact, with VSU’s most recent win over Armstrong Atlantic, the Blazers move sit third overall in the Gulf South Conference and first in the GSC East due to the team’s overall record.

To start the second half of the season, Valdosta State hosts the Wingate by Wyndham Crossover Classic this weekend. VSU plays host to Alabama-Huntsville, Nova Southeastern, West Georgia, Rollins, Florida Tech and Eckerd in the 10-match extravaganza.

The Blazers will face West Georgia in a conference match at 11:30 a.m. Friday and Rollins at 7 p.m. Friday. Saturday, VSU will meet Nova Southeastern and Eckerd in the same time slots. The rest of the tournament shapes up as follows:

Friday

Alabama Huntsville vs. Nova Southeastern at 9 a.m.

Valdosta State vs. West Georgia at 11:30 a.m.

Alabama Huntsville vs. Rollins at 3 p.m.

Nova Southeastern vs. West Georgia at 5:30 p.m.

Valdosta State vs. Rollins at 7 p.m.

Saturday

West Georgia vs. Florida Tech at 9 a.m.

Valdosta State vs. Nova Southeastern at 11:30 a.m.

Alabama-Huntsville vs. Florida Tech at 3 p.m.

West Georgia vs. Rollins at 5:30 p.m.

Valdosta State vs. Eckerd at 7 p.m.

After the tournament, Valdosta State will make a road trip to Augusta State Tuesday, then brace for a home stand against the GSC East. The Blazers will face West Florida, the team’s only conference loss to date, October 22 at 6 p.m., West Alabama October 23 at 1 p.m., Alabama-Huntsville October 29 at 6 p.m. and North Alabama at 3 p.m. October 30. After that, VSU will have two non-conference games and then it will be off to the Gulf South Conference Tournament November 12-14.
