Valdosta, GA - In a battle of ranked opponents, No. 2 Valdosta State, claiming six ranked players and teams, beat No. 6 Rollins with five ranked players and doubles teams of its own. The Blazers took two doubles points and four singles points to outlast Rollins, 6-3, and move on to 3-0 on the season.
Philip Pakebusch and Luis Loeffler, third nationally, played in the second slot against No. 24 Nick Rowlands and Chris Herbert. Pakebusch and Loeffler overran the Rollins team, 8-1.
Meanwhile, there was a fight between the Nos. 2 and 4 teams in the nation in top doubles. No. 2 Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen made short work of No. 4 Jeff Morris and Neil Clausen, beating them by the same score, 8-1.
Sebastian Hafner and Arturo Baravalle were able to save face for Rollins though, winning the third slot in doubles, 8-2, over Bernard Wallner and Konstantin Kutschenko.
In singles, three of Valdosta State’s four ranked players were able to secure victories. Regionally ranked Kutschenko was also able to clinch the match for VSU, winning the fifth point over Herbert. Kutschenko won with ease, 6-1, 6-1.
Before him, No. 8 Dueren, Wallner and No. 22 Loeffler finished in that order. Dueren was the first done with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 33 Clausen. Wallner did not have quite as good a match, falling to David Yawalkar, 6-2, 6-1. Loeffler, however, put away Sebastian Hafner, 6-1, 6-2.
The most drama in the match came after the Blazers had already clinched. No. 6 Pakebusch was facing No. 5 Morris in the top singles spot while No. 25 Hansen was up against No. 46 Baravalle. Both matches resulted in a split in the first two sets so it came down to tiebreakers.
Both tiebreakers ended, 10-8, but only Pakebusch was on top for VSU. Hansen fell, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Rollins was a good test for VSU Friday, but the Blazers will face No. 5 Lynn at 2 p.m. Saturday.
