Dacatur, AL - Valdosta State started the Gulf South Conference Crossover Tournament with a 9-0 victory over Christian Brothers Thursday afternoon.
After four innings of scoreless softball, Sarah Vaughn started the Blazers with a two-out, three-run bomb that sailed over the right field wall despite a strong wind against it.
Jordan Martin reached with a walk after two outs in the fifth inning. April Hutchens followed with a single up the middle. Then, as a pinch hitter, Vaughn struck first blood in the game with a home run in her only appearance of the day.
Before Vaughn’s hit, there were only three hits in the game. Christian Brothers had hit two and Samantha Posey led off with a double down the left side for Valdosta State.
Once Vaughn opened the door, the rest of the Blazers jumped into the action. Valdosta State put up three runs in each of the last three innings.
In the sixth inning, Christian Brothers made the change in the pitcher’s circle from Kaylea Brewer to Michelle McEachron. McEachron walked Ashley Steinhilber to start the inning, and Steinhilber took second, third and home on wild pitches.
Natalia Morozova and Hutchens each reached on walks as well. Then Posey plated both runs with another double to left field for another three-run inning.
In the seventh, Marti Littlefield walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Clare Wamsley took first on Valdosta State’s ninth and final walk, McEachron’s sixth of the game.
With runners at first and second, Morozova sent a line drive to right center for a triple and two runs batted in. Martin scored Morozova with a single to shallow left field. With that, Valdosta State tallied the team’s ninth run of the game.
Holly Satterfield improved to 13-2 with her 10th complete game of the season. She struck out seven and walked two in seven innings. She gave up five hits in the shutout.
Posey was the only Blazer with multiple hits. She finished two for three with two RBIs. Morgan Johnson, Martin, Morozova and Hutchens each went one for three.
Morozova tallied two RBIs and two runs scored while Martin knocked in one and scored once. Hutchens scored twice while Littlefield, Steinhilber and Wamsley all scored once. The headliner of the day though, was Vaughn with one home run and three RBIs in one appearance.
