PENSACOLA, Fla. – Valdosta State ended a tough weekend against the Sunshine State Conference with a split Saturday. The Blazers fell to Saint Leo, 3-1, but beat Lynn, 3-2, to move to 13-11 on the season.
Chelsea Logan and Katie Onushko led the VSU offense Saturday. Logan finished with 24 kills while Onushko contributed 23. Tania Tauiliili and Brittany Smith each added 17 kills.
In the two matches Ashley Lala gave out 74 assists with 14 digs. A Valdosta State trio teamed up to clean the floor for the Blazers. Krista Bradford led the team in digs on the day with 29 while Onushko dug up 28. Chelsea Luttfring added 26 digs on the day.
Against Saint Leo, the Blazers won the second set, but could not get another one in the loss, 25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21. The Blazers hit .083 in the match and Onushko led the team in kills with 10. Smith and Tauiliili each had nine while Logan added seven. Lala gave out 32 assists and Bradford had 17 digs.
The Blazers righted the ship against Lynn with a big day from Logan. She finished the five-set match with 17 kills while Onushko tallied 13. Lala gave out 42 assists while Onushko cleaned up 18 digs. Luttfring and Bradford teamed up for 26 digs.
Valdosta State hit .219 with an impressive .500 attacking percentage in the first set. The Blazers took the match, 25-21, 19-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-12.
The Blazers will return to conference action at West Georgia at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
