VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State’s Gulf South Conference-record breaking winning streak finally came to an end at 36 games with a 1-0 loss to Delta State Sunday. But the Blazers bounced back in a big way with a 9-4 victory in game two, putting up 12 hits. Valdosta State finishes the regular season at 43-3 overall and 26-1 in GSC play. Delta State finishes at 26-29 and 12-16.

Natalia Morozova led VSU with an four for five batting performance on the day, scoring a run. She was a perfect three for three in game two. Clare Wamsley was three for seven with an RBI and a run scored. Morgan Johnson also picked up an RBI but scored three runs on a two for six performance. Four other Blazers tallied RBI, but the only player with multiple RBI Sunday was Marti Littlefield, finishing with two to pull within two RBI of tying the GSC record for career RBI.

Despite losing game one, Alanna Hadley still put on a great performance. She only allowed two hits and one run in seven innings. She struck out two and only allowed a .091 batting average to the Lady Statesmen. Meanwhile, Brianna Hancock earned a win to improve to 14-1. She struck out one, walked one and gave up one earned run in six innings. Also making an appearance was senior pitcher Julia Fink. She retired three batters in the seventh inning of game two.

Sunday was truly a tale of two games. The first was a defensive standoff with both teams only notching a combined five hits and scoring one run. Then, in the second game, there were four errors and five runs on the board after just one inning of play.

Delta State was the only team to score in the first game. Kendall Sizemore was hit by a pitch in the third inning and moved to second on a ground out from Kayla Wilson. The leadoff hitter Maggie Jackson doubled to plate Sizemore for the winning run. The Blazers left six runners stranded in the game.

Game two jumped off a bit quicker. Jackson walked to start the game and scored on an Amber Adcock double. The next hitter put the ball in play for a fielder’s choice and Adcock scored on a VSU error. Next, Ashleigh Allgood knocked a solo home run for the early 3-0 advantage.

When it was VSU’s turn, Delta State committed three errors to help Valdosta State close the gap to 3-2. After holding the Lady Statesmen scoreless in the second, VSU took the lead with three runs in bottom of the inning. Angela O’Connor walked and Wamsley singled. April Hutchens doubled next to plate O’Connor and Wamsley came home on a Johnson double.

Delta State was able to tie the game in the third on a bizarre play. Taylor Hughes hit a ball to deep left field. Johnson, running full speed was able to catch it but, unable to stop in time, ran into the foul pole and dropped the ball. Hughes rounded the bases to score a run. Johnson was shaken up on the play, but returned to score two runs and hit a triple that was just shy of a home run later in the game.

With the game tied in the bottom of the third inning, Morozova laid down a leadoff bunt. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ashley Steinhilber and scored on a Wamsley single. With the lead, 5-4, the Blazers never looked back, scoring two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Albritton singled to start the fourth and reached second thanks to another DSU error on a Johnson fielder’s choice. With two runners on, Littlefield knocked a triple for her two RBI on her only hit of the day.

In the fifth, Albritton blasted her team leading 13th home run of the season. Johnson followed it with a triple that just missed going over the fence and scored on a sacrifice fly from Samantha Posey.

Valdosta State’s next action comes in the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Southaven, Miss. to start Friday and go through the weekend. Continue to check www.vstateblazers.com for updates throughout the postseason.
