Blazers Suffer First GSC Loss

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Valdosta State suffered its first Gulf South Conference loss at the hands of West Florida Sunday, 5-0. The Argonauts tallied five goals to improve to 5-2-2 and stay undefeated in conference play while Valdosta State drops to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

West Florida snuck in two goals in the first half and added three more in the second. Olivia Mills made seven saves in the match, five more than the West Florida keepers, but Mills faced 12 shots on goal from the Argonauts. The Blazers put two shots on goal with 11 shots on the day.

The Argonauts outshot VSU in the first half by a margin of 9-4, but the Blazers picked it up in the second half, only being outshot by two, 9-7.

Leanne Bishop led the team in shots with four, but it was Rebecca Miller and Arielle Sabina who placed Valdosta State’s two shots on goal. Miller tallied two shots on the day while Sabina and four others each took one shot.

West Florida’s Alex Pickrell scored the first goal of the match after a give and go from Monica Malavassi to Tina Murray. Murray found Pickrell who put it on the right post to open the scoring in the eighth minute.

Just before the 36th minute, Lindsay Foy scored the first of her two goals. Foy rebounded Marissa Love’s shot for the score.

Fifteen minute into the second half, Murray and Malavassi hooked up again. Murray finished a cross from Malavassi. Foy scored her second goal from Meredith Testa in the 81st minute, and Tori Fish added the final goal with just two minutes to play on a long range shot.

The Blazers will take a week off from competition and look to rebound on the road against North Alabama at 3 p.m. Sunday.
