Blazers Sweep West Alabama, 8-1, 4-1

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Valdosta State continued to improve its record breaking winning streak with two victories over West Alabama Saturday. The Blazers improved to 39-2 overall and 22-0 in Gulf South Conference play with an 8-1 and 4-1 victory over the Tigers to push their record breaking winning streak to 33 consecutive wins.

Freshman Angela O’Connor led Valdosta State on the day with the team’s only home run, a team-high four runs batted in and a run scored on four for eight at the plate. Also going four for eight was Samantha Posey, who finished with a team-high two doubles and an RBI with two runs scored. Natalia Morozova also finished the day hitting .500 with a three for six performance that led to three RBI.

Both Alanna Hadley and Brianna Hancock picked up wins Saturday to improve the players to 20-1 and 12-1 respectively. Hancock struck out nine and walked one while Hadley struck out five and walked two. They both only allowed one run while Hancock only gave up three hits and Hadley allowed six.

The Blazers struck first blood on the day when Marti Littlefield scored. She doubled and moved to third on a Morozova bunt, then Ashley Steinhilber plated her with a single up the middle. West Alabama, who used four pitchers in the first game of the day, answered with a run, but it would be the Tigers’ only run of the game.

Valdosta State came back to score three runs in the top of the third. Courtney Albritton singled up the middle and moved to second on a passed ball. Morgan Johnson walked next, then Posey hit a double to plate Albritton. Both Johnson and Posey scored on a Morozova double for the early 4-1 advantage.

In the fifth and seventh innings, Valdosta State secured some insurance runs. Littlefield singled and scored on a hit from O’Connor. In the seventh, O’Connor would do it again. Posey doubled and Littlefield walked. After two outs, O’Connor stepped to the plate with two on base. She sent a home run over the left field fence to push the score to 8-1.

The Blazers scored three runs in the second inning to start the scoring in game two. Clare Wamsley walked and April Hutchens singled. Both players scored on a double from Albritton, who then scored on a single from Johnson.

West Alabama was able to finally get on the board with a run in the fifth inning, but the Blazers still held a 3-1 advantage. The Tigers could not score against while Johnson scored for VSU in the seventh. She doubled and scored on a Morozova single to finish the game at 4-1.

Valdosta State will look to keep rolling with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. at West Florida Sunday.
