VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State improved its Gulf South Conference record-breaking winning streak to 36 consecutive games with a 9-0 victory over Christian Brothers in the first game of senior day Saturday. The win improves Valdosta State to 42-2 and 25-0 in conference play. Christian Brothers drops to 11-28 and 6-19 in the GSC. Game two is currently delayed until further notice due to inclement weather.
Morgan Johnson and Clare Wamsley led VSU at the plate. Johnson was a perfect three for three with a home run, a double and four runs batted in. She also scored two runs. Wamsley, meanwhile was two for three with a double and three RBI, also scoring a run. Wamsley hit the three RBI to clinch game one by run rule. Also notching an RBI on the day was Natalia Morozova who was one for three with a run scored.
Alanna Hadley earned her GSC-leading 10th shutout of the season with four strikeouts in five innings of work. She only allowed one hit.
Johnson was the first run to score for VSU. She singled and stole second, then scored when Marti Littlefield put the ball in play, causing a CBU error at first base. Morozova singled to score Littlefield for the early 2-0 advantage.
In the second, Wamsley singled followed by an April Hutchens walk. Both players scored on a Johnson double. In the fourth, Hutchens singled and Johnson notched her third and fourth RBI with her ninth home run of the season.
With a chance to close the game out, the Blazers loaded the bases. Morozova reached on an error while Ashley Steinhilber doubled and Colette Rollins reached on a fielder’s choice. Wamsley doubled to score all three runners to clinch game one.
Afterwards, Valdosta State honored all eight seniors: Hadley, Morozova, Samantha Posey, Julia Fink, Rollins, Wamsley, Hutchens and Littlefield. Right before game two, the weather started to roll in to delay game two.
