BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Valdosta State senior Brittany Ferguson put on stellar performances against Alabama-Huntsville and North Alabama to claim her conference high fifth Gulf South Conference Player of the Week award and her second in three weeks. No other GSC player has been named more than three times.
For the week, Ferguson averaged a double-double, 17.5 points and 15.5 rebounds per game. She was dominant in a 59-58 victory over North Alabama when VSU needed every bit of her career high 27 points while adding 16 rebounds. The game marked her eighth double-double of the season which ties her with Delta State’s Veronica Walker for the conference lead.
Against North Alabama, Ferguson did her scoring on 11 of 19 shooting from the field for an impressive 57.9 percent, her 11th performance of 50 percent or higher shooting. With 3:50 left to play, Ferguson had scored 23 points while no other Lady Blazer had more than six in the game.
Ferguson showed her resiliency in a 65-55 victory over then first place Alabama-Huntsville. After being held to just one point and four rebounds in the first half, she bounced back to finish the game with a game high 15 rebounds and eight points.
Ferguson’s work along with the rest of the Lady Blazers have kept Valdosta State in the hunt at the top of the Gulf South Conference. She is second in the GSC in scoring, 17.2 points per game, and rebounding, 8.8 rebounds per game.
Thursday, Ferguson and the Lady Blazers will host West Alabama at 6 p.m. looking for a fourth consecutive win. With a victory and a UAH loss to Delta State, VSU vaults into the top two in the GSC.
