VALDOSTA, Ga. – Florida Southern and Morehouse met up for the first match of the NCAA South Regional Tournament Sunday, and Florida Southern finished victorious. The Mocs swept through Morehouse, winning, 5-0, to advance to play Valdosta State at 2 p.m. Monday.
Florida Southern held a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles play. Ivan Marevic and Brian deMontfort teamed up to beat Mario Ecung and Jordan Bailey, 8-1, in the top doubles spot. Benoit Paradis and C.J. Johnson beat Michael Thomas and Noah Terry by the same score in second doubles.
At the third spot, Jorge Gutierrez and Nathan Leavitt put away James Pressley and Nathaniel Sinckler, 8-0, for the early FSC lead going into singles.
Needing only two points, Florida Southern’s Johnson and Leavitt complied. Johnson beat Terry in matching 6-0, 6-0 sets while Leavitt beat Kahai Hall by the same score to secure a chance at VSU at 2 p.m. Monday.
The win pushes Florida Southern to 16-8 on the season while Morehouse’s season will end at 11-11.
At 10 a.m. Monday, Rollins and West Florida will meet. Valdosta State will take on Florida Southern at 2 p.m. and the winners of both matches will face each other at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
