Birmingham, AL - Valdosta State’s senior outside hitter Ruthie King was named the Gulf South Conference’s East Division’s Defensive Player of the Week.
King earned the honor for her part in an undefeated week for VSU. King averaged 3.33 digs per game in matches against Fort Valley State, and conference rivals Alabama-Huntsville and North Alabama.
She tallied a high of 19 digs in the Blazers’ biggest match of the week, a 3-2 come-from-behind win on the road against the last unbeaten team in GSC play, North Alabama. The win pulled VSU into a three-way tie for first place in the GSC East.
King wasn’t bad offensively either throughout the week. She put together a perfect match against Fort Valley State with seven kills and no errors. Then she tallied double-doubles against both UAH and the Lions.
For the season, King averages 3.58 digs and 2.83 kills per set, good enough for second on the team in both categories.
Wednesday night, King will team up with the rest of the Blazers for a match against Armstrong Atlantic State.
