MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Valdosta State notched the team's second win in as many games with a 67-58 victory over Barry Saturday night to move to 2-0 on the year.
Bena Hanyard, stepping up this season at the point guard position, led all players with 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists. She proved steady at the free throw line going 15 of 16 and hit the only three-pointer she shot. Hanyard was an example of the entire team's steadiness at the charity stripe. The Lady Blazers went 24 of 28 at the line.
For the second game in a row, seniors Brittany Ferguson and Sczeny Hartry played well for VSU. Ferguson nearly double-doubled with 16 points and nine rebounds. She shot 50 percent from the field.
Also shooting 50 percent from the field was Hartry. She finished with 14 points and was perfect on four shots from the free throw line.
Junior transfer Maylisa Johnson also scored in double digits with 12 points on six of seven from the field. She added five rebounds.
The Valdosta State offense was efficient throughout the game, shooting 48.8 percent the field and 37.5 percent from three-point range.
Valdosta State's true advantage came on the glass, bringing down 34 rebounds to just 19 for Barry. The Lady Blazers tallied 10 offensive rebounds and 24 defensive rebounds. No Buc tallied more than four rebounds. Valdosta State's success on the boards led directly to 14 second-chance points.
Barry earned a lead of five points just over three minutes into the game, but it would be the Bucs' largest lead of the game. Valdosta State would eventually build a lead of 16 points with 17:10 left in the game.
Valdosta State opens its home schedule at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Georgia Southwestern to be followed by the Blazers against Saint Leo at approximately 8 p.m.
