Lady Blazers Blast Christian Brothers

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State won its ninth consecutive game Saturday night to move to 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers proved no match for VSU as the Lady Blazers poured it on for a 57-42 victory.

Guards Kourtnee Williams and Sczeny Hartry led VSU against the Lady Bucs. Both players scored 11 points while Williams gave out three assists and stole the ball four times. Williams also dropped one of two VSU three-pointers in the game, the other coming from Jordan Waugh.

In addition to the guards, forward Brittany Ferguson completed her fifth double-double and her second in as many games to tie for the lead in the conference. She scored 10 points with 10 rebounds, five coming on the offensive glass to help VSU outrebound CBU, 37-31, and 19-10 on the offensive boards.

Christian Brothers was no match for VSU in the paint as the Lady Blazers scored 26 points from the lane to just 14 for CBU. The VSU defense forced 22 turnovers with 14 steals while only giving up the ball 12 times. That led to 17 points off turnovers to just six for the Lady Bucs. Valdosta State pushed the ball ahead for 10 points on the break. The defense did not allow a double-digit scorer from Christian Brothers.

The Lady Blazers raced out to an early 14-6 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Valdosta State ultimately built a first half lead up to 21 points with a 33-12 lead at the break, the team’s largest of the night.

Hartry and Williams paced VSU throughout the first half, each scoring eight points. Ferguson and Courtney Mitchell each brought down six rebounds in the first half.

Christian Brothers finished shooting 35 percent from the field, but the Lady Blazer defense held the Lady Bucs to just 19 percent shooting in the first half while pouring it in at a rate of 43.8 percent in the first frame. Valdosta State would finish shooting 36.7 percent from the field.

For CBU, nobody scored more than Breanna Ridgell and Jessica Green’s eight points. Five players finished with four rebounds each to lead the team and Adrienne McKay was the leading playmaker with two assists.

Valdosta State will look to continue its winning streak on the road as the Lady Blazers head to Alabama-Huntsville, North Alabama and West Alabama for the team’s first road conference games of the season. Valdosta State will face UAH at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and UNA at 2 p.m. Saturday.
