Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State used a strong defensive effort from the entire roster to shut down Coastal Georgia Friday night, 58-38, and move to 7-2 on the season. As VSU cruised to the team’s fifth consecutive victory, the Lady Blazers gave up the least amount of points they’ve allowed all season.

Not surprisingly, Sczeny Hartry led the team in scoring with 14 points on the night. She shot four of seven from three-point range and made her first three long balls she shot. The Lady Blazers saw double-digit contributions from Brooke Satterfield (12), Amber Bond (11) and Brittany Ferguson (10).

After notching two consecutive double-doubles, Ferguson finished the night with 10 points and six rebounds. The Lady Blazers only needed 17 minutes from her for the win as opposed to the 33.1 minutes per game she was averaging. Despite the short amount of playing time, Ferguson did manage to lead the Lady Blazers on the glass as VSU finished with nine more rebounds than Coastal Georgia.

Maylisa Johnson continues to prove she is one of the best playmakers to play at VSU in some time. She gave out seven assists to follow her 10-assist performance Thursday night. She also finished with five rebounds and two steals.

The vaunted Valdosta State defense held Coastal Georgia to just 20.8 percent shooting overall and a paltry 23.5 percent shooting from three-point land. The Lady Blazers were especially stingy beyond the arc in the first half, only allowing an 18.2 shooting percent from long range.

Meanwhile, Valdosta State shot 45.5 percent in the second half to finish shooting 40 percent overall. The Lady Blazers finished the night shooting 44.4 percent from three-point range on eight of 18 shooting.

Valdosta State really dominated throughout the game. The Lady Blazers won the scoring in the paint (14-6), points off turnovers (20-18), fast break points (9-4) and bench points (29-6). At no point did VSU allow Coastal Georgia to lead in the game.

After a much deserved Christmas break, Valdosta State returns to action against Nova Southeastern at 6 p.m. December 30 and Palm Beach Atlantic at 2 p.m. December 31 at The Complex.
