VALDOSTA, Ga. – North Alabama used a seven run fourth inning to defeat Valdosta State 14-4 in seven innings in Gulf South Conference baseball action at Billy Grant Field Sunday afternoon.
North Alabama (21-7, 6-2) got on the board first as the Lions took advantage of a lead-off walk to score a run in the top of the first inning. Michael Schmidt drew the free pass and stole second before a J.P. LaMunyon single up the middle drove him home.
Valdosta State (9-16, 3-6) got the lead off man on in each of the first two innings and also stranded a runner in the third while UNA took advantage of three errors in the fourth inning to push its lead to 8-0. Josh Cyr singled to lead off the inning and moved to second as the ball was bobbled before Jared Mothershed reached base when Blazer starter was unable to cleanly field a sacrifice bunt attempt. Dale Ricketts followed with a double down the left field line to score Cyr while Mothershed scored on a wild pitch that moved Ricketts to third. Josh Carpenter was hit by a pitch and stole second before Drew Parker tallied a walk to load the bases while Nick McGregor singled to score Ricketts. Ground outs by Schmidt and a Blake Stroth brought home two more runs and a wild pitch drove home McGregor. LaMunyon reached on a fielding error on a ground ball and Cyr was hit by a pitch while Mothershed singled to plate LaMunyon for the final run of the inning.
The Blazers got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth as Christian Glisson was hit by a pitch and scored as Bobby Triglia followed with his sixth home run of the year only to have North Alabama add a single run in the sixth and five more in the seventh.
Joel Cardinal and Tyler Reimer each collected hits and scored runs for Valdosta State in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring.
Kevin Rogers fell to 1-4 for the Blazers as he allowed five hits and eight runs, four earned, in three and two-thirds innings. Chad Boughner improved to 4-1 for UNA after giving up six hits and four runs in six and two-thirds innings.
Triglia collected two hits and two RBI to lead VSU offensively while Ricketts and LaMunyon had three hits each for the Lions.
Valdosta State returns to action Wednesday, March 23 when it travels to Dahlonega, Ga. to face North Georgia.
