Birmingham, AL - For the second week in a row, Valdosta State swept the Gulf South Conference’s East Division’s softball Player of the Week awards. Holly Satterfield and Samantha Posey took home the honors for VSU. It is the first Player of the Week award for Posey while Satterfield takes home her conference-high fifth award of the season.
Satterfield’s fifth award of the year makes eight for her VSU career. She earned the award this week for picking up two victories and pitching three complete games. She pitched a five-inning shutout against Albany State for her 30th shutout of her career, one short of the VSU all-time record.
She also led VSU to a 5-1 victory over conference foe West Georgia. She struck out 18 batters in 21 innings played.
Posey blasted six home runs in six games to earn her first award. In a doubleheader against Albany State, Posey notched 11 RBI on a five for seven performance. She added four home runs to hit the home run cycle: a one-run shot, a two-run homer, a three-run bomb and a grand slam. The feat earned her national attention.
She was not done for the week though, hitting two home runs in one game against West Georgia for four RBI. Her last home run was a walk-off shot to finish a run-ruled game in the fifth inning.
Posey finished the week with 15 RBI to bring her to 38 on the season, second on the team behind Natalia Morozova and her 41 RBI.
The duo helped Valdosta State clinch the second seed from the GSC East in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Valdosta State will play its first game of the tournament Friday, May 6. Before then, however, Valdosta State Softball will square off against VSU Football at the Softball Complex at 6 p.m. Friday for the Blazer Softball Showdown.
