Valdosta, GA - In Valdosta State’s first annual Blazer Softball Showdown fans found out why the football team plays on the gridiron and VSU Softball rules the diamond. The Lady Blazers rolled to a 10-1 victory while Football racked up seven errors.

VSU Football made it interesting early though. With two strikes, the leadoff hitter Davis Durham sent a solo home run deep into the parking lot behind the fence for an early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for football, it would be the team’s only run.

The football players did show off some nifty defense throughout the game. Fans saw John Belt and Sedrick Johnson make diving catches in the outfield, and Chris Caspari was quick at third base. Football was always a threat to steal. But, ultimately, Softball showed up like the team always does.

The Lady Blazer softball team tallied 12 hits with two each coming from Samantha Posey, Marti Littlefield, Morgan Johnson, April Hutchens and Melessa Jackson.

Softball belted three home runs in the game with two of them coming from Johnson. Jackson might have had the most impressive hit though. With bases loaded, Jackson hit a ball down the left line. With all of her base runners scoring, she went for home. Jackson completed the inside-the-park grand slam.

With Football up one, Johnson tied the game in the second inning with a solo homer. In the third, Posey doubled down the left line, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a Littlefield single for Softball’s first lead.

In the fifth inning, Softball busted out. Littlefield scored first on a passed ball. Then Amanda McElheney walked, April Collins reached on an error, and Hutchens singled to load the bases. Jackson did the rest with her inside-the-parker to bust the game open, 7-1. Softball added three insurance runs in the sixth and closed out strong.
