ROME, Ga. – Valdosta State concluded the weekend’s tough road trip with a 3-1 victory over Shorter (25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-22), to improve to 13-7 on the season and move above .500 in Gulf South Conference play at 6-5. The loss drops Shorter to 13-5 overall and 6-4 in GSC action.
The Blazers played scrappy in a tough match. The best team attacking percentage VSU could put together was .209 in the final set. Valdosta State finished hitting .124 behind the performance of Tania Tauiliili. She finished with a team high 12 kills on a .207 attacking percentage.
Nikki McDaniel also reached double figure kills with 10. Ashley Lala set both players up with 42 assists in the match while Chelsea Luttfring swiped the floor clean with a match high 31 digs. McDaniel and Krista Bradford added 10 digs each.
Shorter saw three Hawks reach double figure kills but weren’t nearly as efficient as VSU. Shorter finished with a .066 attacking percentage with nine players hitting .000 or lower. Of the four sets, Shorter’s team attacking percentage was negative in two of them, thanks in large part to Luttfring’s 31 digs.
The Blazers had 13 more digs than Shorter while both teams finished with eight blocks. Tauiliili led VSU’s efforts at the net with five blocks, four of which were solo.
Valdosta State will return to action Thursday, Friday and Saturday the Gulf South/Sunshine State Conference Crossover Tournament in Tampa, Fla.
