TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State took advantage of wildness by the Valdosta State pitching staff to defeat the Blazers 10-2 in non-conference baseball action at Dick Howser Stadium Wednesday night.
The Seminoles, who improved to 22-7 on the season, finished with seven hits in the game, but drew 12 walks and were hit by five pitches.
Florida State took advantage of a pair of walks and a two-out hit to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. VSU starter Brett Kennedy hit Devon Travis with his first pitch and, after a line out, walked the next two batters to load the bases. A sacrifice fly drove home Travis while Rafael Lopez singled up the middle to score the final two.
The Seminoles added four more runs in the second inning, including three on James Ramsey's fifth home run of the season, before pushing its lead to 8-0 in the fifth on a RBI ground out by Mike McGee.
Valdosta State, which fell to 14-18, got its only run in the seventh inning on a two-out single by Graves. With one out in the frame, Josh Vining doubled to right-center and scored as Graves hit a pitch back up the middle to batters later.
FSU pushed its advantage to 9-1 in the bottom of the seventh before adding its final run in the eighth. The Blazers took advantage of two errors by Sherman Johnson at third base in the top of the ninth to score the game's final run.
Kennedy fell to 3-4 on the season after allowing walking two, hitting two and giving up one hit and three runs in one inning of work. The six Blazer pitchers that appeared in the game combined to strike out eight Florida State batters. Valdosta State also collected seven hits in the game, including three by Cameron Graves.
David Trexler improved to 1-0 for Florida State as he surrendered two hits and struck out four in a pre-determined three innings on the mound. Seven different Seminoles collected a hit in the game as Ramsey drove in three runs while McGee and Lopez added two RBIs each.
Valdosta State returns to action Saturday, April 9 when it travels to Huntsville, Ala. to face Alabama-Huntsville for a three-game Gulf South Conference series. The two teams meet in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. Eastern on Saturday followed by a single game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
