Valdosta, GA -- It's been a long wait for Melissa Heinz to show off the first VSU women's soccer team.
"I'm ready to finally show the kids and their abilities for what I've been bragging about for some time," says Melissa Heinz
She won't have to wait too much longer. Less than a month until VSU opens camp that will have 22 freshman, three sophomores and five juniors in the inaugural class.
"They've got a summer program that they can do on their own and they're doing it. It's exciting hearing the other kids coming in and how they're excited and nervous all at the same time."
Sophomore Lizzie Lohmar had to sacrifice a year of playing to be with VSU. She committed to the Blazers in April of 2010 then enrolled and spent her first year training.
"It was pretty tough. I have a lot of friends of mine who play soccer in college so I got to talk to them a lot and see how it really was," adds Lohmar. "I'm just excited to experience it for myself."
Right now VSU is holding a soccer camp where some of the players are serving as coaches to fill the time until practice begins.
Coach Heinz adds, "It's good because they're able to get their face out in the community and get these little soccer kids excited about them."
Lizzie Lohmar adds, "It's a new team, it's a new program so preseason we'll get to know each other a lot better, suffering together."
The first game for the new program is September 1st against Georgia Southwestern.
