Valdostam GA - In a rematch of last season’s postseason battle between Fort Valley State and Valdosta State, the Wildcats moved to 1-2 on the season with a 62-56 win over VSU. After outscoring FVSU, 41-32, in the first half, the Lady Blazers only scored 15 in the second frame to drop to 1-1.
Sczeny Hartry led the way for Valdosta State with 19 points, 12 on four of seven from beyond the arc. Courtney Mitchell and Jordan Waugh chipped in 17 combined points, and Brittany Ferguson led in rebounding with eight. Mitchell tallied five offensive boards and was four of five from the field.
Valdosta State couldn’t be stopped in the first half, finishing 51.7 percent from the field and 70 percent from long range. Dropping 41 points in the first frame, VSU led by as much as 15 points thanks to a Hartry jumper with 1:14 left in the first. But the percentages balanced out in the second half, as VSU was just four of 18 for 22.2 percent.
The Wildcats saw four score in double figures led by Kendra Evans with 16. Yasheeka Jones passed out five assists and stole the ball five times with 11 points. Jasmine Birdson brought down seven boards.
The Lady Blazers lost the battle in the paint and off turnovers. Fort Valley State scored 24 points in the paint and 26 off turnovers to just 10 and 12 for VSU. Valdosta State turned the ball over 28 times to FVSU’s 17.
Valdosta State dropped nine three balls in the game with four players scoring from deep. Hartry led with four made threes, followed by two three-pointers from Shakeda Richie and Alisha Crawford. Waugh buried one too.
The Lady Blazers will look to bounce back against regional rival Tampa at 7 p.m. at The Complex Saturday.
