VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State fought through an overtime period and continuous rain in the second half to secure a 1-0 victory off the foot of Arielle Sabina. The Blazers moved to 5-2 on the season with the 1-0 win in their Gulf South Conference opener against Christian Brothers and earned the team’s first overtime victory.
The Blazers held an overwhelming advantage in shots, 23-6. With that many opportunities, it was a matter of time before Valdosta State could put one in the net. Margaret Stauffer took the corner just over halfway through the first extra period. The ball rolled across the front of the net and Sabina found it for the finish.
Despite the match going into extra time, the Blazers dominated with 11 shots on goal to just one for Christian Brothers. The Lady Bucs goalkeeper, Robyn Wade, made 10 saves in nearly 98 minutes of play until Sabina snuck one past her.
Valdosta State held an 8-3 advantage in shots at halftime and a 12-3 advantage in the second half.
Lauren Hale and Sabina led the charge offensively with two shots on goal each, but seven other Blazers placed a shot on goal in the match.
Valdosta State returns to action against Delta State at 1 p.m. Sunday at the VSU Soccer Complex.
