Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State started a weekend packed full of matches with a tough loss to No. 10 Rollins. The Tars swept VSU, 9-0, with the Lady Blazers only winning one set.
In doubles play, Nicole Hernandez and Leslie Roberge were the first to fall, 8-0, at the hands of Roshni Luthra and Allie Steele. Alina Nagel and Jessica Tuggle played in the top spot against No. 24 Margaret Junker and Kayli Ragsdale. The 24th ranked team in the nation put away Nagel and Tuggle, 8-2. After that, Kristel de Groot and Sarah Braun fell, 8-3, in the second spot to Lisa Loft and Ashley Rosenberg.
Jahyna Pope, Roberge, Tuggle, Hernandez and Nagel played in the sixth through second slots in singles play, almost finishing in that order. Nagel did finish before Hernandez. All players fell in two sets.
The only player to take a set was Braun, and she did it in the top spot against No. 26 Luthra. After falling behind, 5-2, Braun made a furious comeback to take the first set, 7-5. She was not able to prolong her momentum, and eventually fell, 5-7, 6-3, (6).
Valdosta State will look to rebound at 2 p.m. Saturday against an even tougher opponent, No. 3 Lynn.
