HOOVER, Ala. - Four Valdosta State cross country runners earned All-Gulf South Conference honors as the men's squad finished tied for fourth while the women came home sixth at the Gulf South Conference Championships at Veterans Park Saturday morning.
Jordanne Helton led both squads as she finished fourth to earn first team All-GSC honors. Taylor Harrington earned second team accolades by finishing 19th for the women while Jesse Prince and Chris Rice were both second team All-GSC for the men, finishing 15th and 19th respectively.
Helton finished the 5,000 meter course in a time of 19:39 while Harrington came home in 20:37. Ashley Luther finished 31st at 21:04 and was followed by Lisa Connelly in 53rd at 22:55. April Meeks finished 59th at 23:30 while Samantha Stewart rounded out the women's team in 61st at 25:01.
West Alabama's Polina Babkina claimed individual medalist honors in a time of 19:07. West Florida claimed team honors with 53 points while Delta State was second with 69. UWa followed with 75 while Alabama-Huntsville had 85 and West Georgia 100. VSU finished with 151 points and was followed by North Alabama in seventh with 162 and Christian Brothers with 223.
Prince ran a time of 27:21 for the 8,000 meter course while Rice finished in a time of 27:41. D.J. Smith was another 10 seconds back and just missed All-GSC honors as he finished 21st while Austin McDonald was 36th at 29:32. Marc Kaiser tallied a time of 31:23 to finish 45th while Ryan Winkle came home 49th at 32:18.
Alabama-Huntsville's Josh Moshier claimed the individual honors with a time of 26:28 as the Chargers registered the race's top four finishers. UAH claimed the team championship with 17 points while West Florida was second at 55. West Alabama finished with 78 for third while Christian Brothers (165) and North Alabama (174) rounded out the field.
The two teams return to action Saturday, November 5 when they run in the NCAA South Regional meet in Tampa, Fla.
