VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State notched the program’s second victory with a 4-1 win over Queens Monday. Rebecca Miller and Blakely McClellan led the team late to secure the victory.
Valdosta State’s match against Queens was much closer than the drubbing of Georgia Southwestern in the inaugural game. In fact, the first half passed without a single score. Both teams stayed active throughout the opening frame though, with VSU tallying eight shots to six for Queens.
In the second half, the more aggressive Blazers outshot the Royals, 9-4, paying huge dividends.
Defender Arielle Sabina started the scoring with a goal from far outside the box on a free kick after a Queens foul. As a defender, Sabina might not score too often this season, but she has one of the best feet on the team for long balls as she takes most of the corners. She proved it with the team’s opening goal in the 75th minute.
Queens did not stay down for long though with a running attack from Kristen Wright. Sami Striano found a streaking Wright to tie the match and score the first ever goal against Valdosta State.
A mere six minutes later, McClellan and Miller started their show. Heinz, looking for an offensive spark, subbed both players back into the match late in the 78th minute. The duo did not disappoint.
Miller put a through ball to McClellan who saw a charging Queens keeper. From right at the edge of the box, McClellan released the shot early before the keeper could cut the angle to reclaim a lead for Valdosta State.
Four minutes after that, Miller fed McClellan again. As VSU applied pressure to the Royals, Miller centered the ball and McClellan snuck it in with a sliding kick to break the game wide open.
Valdosta State, looking for more, scored the fourth goal with just over a minute left. Miller, after winning the kickoff, charged down the left middle of the field and lobbed the ball over the keeper from outside the box.
Next, the Blazers will take their show on the road to face Coker at 4 p.m. Friday. Valdosta State returns to the VSU Soccer Complex for a matchup against Montevallo at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
