Valdosta, Ga. – Florida Tech swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Valdosta State Sunday afternoon at Billy Grant Field as the Panthers won game one 9-2 and game two 9-3.
Florida Tech (5-2) got on the scoreboard first in the first game as K.C. Clabough opened the contest with a double just inside the third base bag. He was sacrificed to third and scored as Ryan McChesney followed with a single through a drawn-in infield to give FIT a 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers pushed their lead to 2-0 in the third before Valdosta State (1-5) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Marc Overstreet and Cameron Graves each singled to open the frame before a double play erased Graves and moved Overstreet to third. Joel Cardinal followed with a single to left that plated Overstreet, cutting the Blazer deficit to 2-1.
FIT added two more runs to its lead in the fifth when Jimmie Koch hit a two-out, two-run home run over the wall in right while Christian Glisson hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the run to close VSU to within 4-2.
Florida Tech added a fifth run in the seventh before closing out the scoring with four more in the ninth.
Kevin Rogers (0-1) took the game one loss for Valdosta State as he allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits in five inning of work. FIT's Josh Ziemba improved to 1-0 as he gave up seven hits and two runs in seven innings of work.
Valdosta State scored first in game two when John Willner opened the second with a single and scored two batters later on a Josh Vining double to left-center.
After having a runner thrown out at the plate in the third, the Panthers took the lead in the fourth. John Fouchet doubled to open the frame and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring when McChensey homered to right for a 2-1 Florida Tech advantage.
FIT closed out the scoring with a Clabough triple in the sixth that plated Josh Hinkle.
Brett Kennedy allowed five hits and three runs while striking out seven in five and two-thirds innings while falling to 0-1. Randall Thompson surrendered seven hits and one run in a complete game to improve to 2-0.
Willner and Glisson tallied four hits each on the day to lead VSU offensively while Overstreet had two.
Valdosta State returns to action Wednesday, February 16 when it travels to Americus, Ga. to face Georgia Southwestern at 5:00 p.m.
