Huntsville, AL - Valdosta State took to the road this weekend for the team’s first Gulf South Conference road matches. The first was a test in Huntsville, Alabama as Valdosta State survived, 3-2 (14-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13), to move to 9-4 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
Chelsea Logan led the offensive attack for Valdosta State with 16 kills while Katie Onushko had 14 with six assists and nine digs. Tania Tauiliili chipped in 10 kills from the middle.
Ashley Lala continued her stellar freshman season with 45 assists and 11 digs on the night. Freshman counterpart Krista Bradford led the team in digs with 12. Tauiliili led the defensive effort at the net with five blocks, one of which was solo, to help VSU tally eight blocks on the night.
Four Chargers had double-digit kills while three had double-digit digs. Alabama-Huntsville struck one more total kill than VSU, 58-57, and hit .255 to Valdosta State’s .183 attacking percentage, but the Blazers pulled it out, coming back from a 2-1 deficit.
With the fifth and deciding set tied at 12, Valdosta State responded after a timeout. Lala recorded a kill followed by one from Jennifer Beatty for the 14-12 advantage. After one point from Alabama-Huntsville, Onushko clinched the match with a kill from Lala.
Saturday, the Blazers will face the Tigers of West Alabama in Livingston, Alabama, at 3 p.m.
