Valdosta State and West Florida to Meet in the Finals

Valdosta, GA - After Florida Southern swept Morehouse on Sunday, Valdosta State returned the favor with a 5-0 sweep of the Moccasins Monday. With the win, Valdosta State secures a spot in the finals against West Florida at 11 a.m. Tuesday for the right to go onto the NCAA Men’s Tennis National Tournament.

The Blazers snagged an early 3-0 lead after doubles. Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen put away Ivan Marevic and Brian deMontfort, 8-3, while Luis Loeffler and Philip Pakebusch beat Benoit Paradis and C.J. Johnson, 8-2. Bernhard Wallner and Konstantin Kutschenko outlasted Jorge Gutierrez and Nathan Leavitt, 8-5.

Needing only two points in singles, VSU looked to Dueren and Loeffler. Loeffler was the first to finish with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Johnson in fourth singles. Dueren clinched the match with a victory over Paradis in matching 6-1 sets.

Valdosta State and West Florida will meet for the third time this season. The Blazers won both earlier matches, taking the regular season meeting, 7-2, and beating the Argonauts for the Gulf South Conference Championship, 5-1. The Blazers will need to win a third time to go to the NCAA Nationals.
